Opening your dishwasher after a full cycle only to find dishes still covered in food and grease is incredibly frustrating. A dishwasher that isn’t cleaning properly is one of the most common appliance complaints — and it’s usually caused by one of several fixable issues. Before you hand-wash everything or replace the machine, read through these common causes.
Rapid Appliance Repair services dishwashers throughout NY and NJ. Call (845) 217-1800 for same-day or next-day repair.
1. Clogged Spray Arms
The spray arms are the rotating components that shoot water onto your dishes during the wash cycle. The small holes in these arms can become clogged with mineral deposits, food particles, and grease over time. When the holes are blocked, water pressure drops and dishes don’t get properly cleaned — especially on the top rack.
What to do: Remove the spray arms (they usually unscrew or unclip easily) and rinse them under warm water. Use a toothpick or small brush to clear any blocked holes. Soak them in white vinegar for 30 minutes to dissolve mineral buildup. Reinstall and run a test cycle.
2. Dirty or Clogged Filter
Most modern dishwashers have a filter at the bottom of the tub that catches food debris to prevent it from recirculating onto clean dishes. When this filter gets clogged — which happens faster than most people realize — dirty water recirculates during the wash cycle and leaves residue on everything.
How to clean it: Remove the bottom rack and locate the filter (usually a cylindrical component in the center bottom of the tub). Twist it out, rinse it under warm water, and scrub gently with a soft brush. Clean it monthly for best results.
3. Wrong Detergent or Too Little Detergent
Using the wrong type of detergent, old detergent, or too little detergent will result in poor cleaning every single time. Dishwasher detergent that has clumped together from moisture exposure loses its effectiveness. And using regular dish soap — even a small amount — will cause excessive suds that interfere with the wash cycle entirely.
Best practice: Use fresh, high-quality dishwasher detergent pods or powder. Store detergent in a dry location. Never use hand dish soap in a dishwasher.
4. Water Not Hot Enough
Dishwashers need hot water — ideally 120°F to 140°F — to effectively dissolve grease and activate detergent. If your water heater is set too low, or if the dishwasher’s internal heating element has failed, the water won’t get hot enough to clean properly. You may notice a greasy film on dishes and glasses.
What to check: Run your kitchen faucet on hot for a minute before starting the dishwasher to ensure hot water reaches the appliance. Check your water heater setting — it should be at least 120°F. If dishes are still greasy after this, the dishwasher’s heating element may need to be tested.
5. Overloading or Improper Loading
Even a perfectly functioning dishwasher won’t clean well if dishes are packed too tightly, stacked on top of each other, or blocking the spray arms. Large pots and pans in the wrong position can prevent the spray arms from rotating freely.
Loading tips: Angle dishes slightly toward the spray arms, keep the center of the bottom rack clear, place glasses and cups upside-down on the top rack, and make sure the spray arms can rotate freely before starting a cycle.
6. Faulty Wash Pump or Motor
If you’ve cleaned the filter, spray arms, and tried fresh detergent but the dishwasher still cleans poorly, the problem may be mechanical. A failing wash pump motor produces reduced water pressure, meaning dishes never get the force of water they need. You may notice the dishwasher sounds quieter than usual during the wash cycle.
This is a repair that requires a certified technician. Our team can diagnose and replace a wash pump efficiently, often in a single visit.
