Few things disrupt a household more than an oven that won’t heat up — especially when you’re in the middle of preparing a meal. Whether your oven shows no heat at all, heats unevenly, or won’t reach the right temperature, the problem almost always comes down to one of several common, repairable issues.
Rapid Appliance Repair services ovens, ranges, and cooktops across NY and NJ. Call (845) 217-1800 for same-day or next-day repair appointments.
1. Burned Out Bake or Broil Element (Electric Ovens)
Electric ovens have two heating elements — the bake element at the bottom and the broil element at the top. Either or both can burn out over time. A burned-out bake element is the most common reason an electric oven stops heating. You may be able to see visible damage like blistering, holes, or dark spots on the element itself.
What to do: If you visually spot damage on an element, don’t use the oven. The element needs to be replaced by a technician. Even if there’s no visible damage, a failed element can be confirmed with a multimeter test.
2. Faulty Igniter (Gas Ovens)
Gas ovens use an igniter to open the gas valve and ignite the burner. The igniter is the most commonly replaced part in gas ovens. When it weakens, it may glow but not get hot enough to open the gas valve, meaning the oven never lights and never heats up. The full preheat cycle runs, but the temperature never rises.
Signs of a weak igniter: The oven takes much longer than usual to preheat, or it never reaches temperature at all. You may also smell a faint gas odor as the valve tries to open. Igniter replacement is one of the most common and affordable oven repairs we perform.
3. Faulty Temperature Sensor
The temperature sensor tells the oven’s control board what temperature the oven has reached. If the sensor is faulty, the oven may heat unevenly, overheat, or never reach the set temperature. In some cases, the oven display shows the correct temperature while the actual internal temperature is completely different.
How to identify: Oven food burns on the outside but is raw inside, or the oven takes twice as long as it should to reach temperature. A technician can test the sensor’s resistance to confirm whether it’s reading correctly.
4. Faulty Control Board
Modern ovens are controlled by an electronic control board that manages everything from temperature regulation to self-clean cycles. If the control board fails, the oven may not heat at all, or it may heat erratically. Control board failures are more common in newer, high-feature ovens and in ovens that have experienced power surges.
Signs of a bad control board: Error codes on the display, unresponsive touchpad, oven that heats sometimes but not others. Control board replacement is a more involved repair that requires the correct part for your model.
5. Tripped Breaker or Blown Fuse (Electric Ovens)
Electric ranges and ovens typically run on a 240-volt circuit. A tripped breaker or blown fuse in your electrical panel can cut power to the heating elements while leaving the oven lights and display functional. This is an easy first thing to check before calling for service.
What to do: Check your breaker panel for a tripped circuit labeled “Range” or “Oven.” Reset it fully — off, then on. If it trips again immediately, there’s an electrical fault that needs professional attention.
6. Self-Clean Lock Malfunction
After a self-clean cycle, the oven door locks until it cools to a safe temperature. If the door latch motor or thermal fuse associated with the self-clean cycle fails, the oven can remain locked and non-functional even after cooling. This is a known issue on several popular oven brands.
If your oven stopped working right after a self-clean cycle, this is likely the cause. A technician can diagnose and replace the latch assembly or thermal fuse.
