A dryer that runs but produces no heat is one of the most common appliance repair calls we receive. Your clothes tumble, the cycle runs, but everything comes out just as wet as when it went in. The cause is almost always one of a handful of specific parts — and most are very repairable.

At Rapid Appliance Repair, we diagnose and fix dryer heating problems across NY and NJ with same-day and next-day service. Call us at (845) 217-1800 to get your dryer working again today.

1. Blown Thermal Fuse

The thermal fuse is a one-time safety device designed to blow if your dryer overheats. Once it blows, the dryer will continue to run — tumbling and cycling normally — but it will produce zero heat. This is the single most common cause of a dryer not heating.

Important: A blown thermal fuse is usually a symptom of restricted airflow, not the root cause. If we replace the fuse without also cleaning out a clogged vent, the new fuse will blow again. A proper repair addresses both the fuse and the underlying cause.

2. Clogged Dryer Vent

A clogged dryer vent is not just a performance issue — it’s a fire hazard. When lint accumulates in the vent duct over time, it restricts airflow, causes the dryer to overheat, and eventually blows the thermal fuse. Dryer vent fires are one of the leading causes of house fires in the US.

Signs of a clogged vent: Clothes take more than one cycle to dry, the dryer feels very hot to the touch, or you notice a burning smell. Have your vent professionally cleaned every 1–2 years, and always clean the lint trap before every load.

3. Failed Heating Element (Electric Dryers)

Electric dryers use a coiled heating element — similar to an oven element — to generate heat. Over time, this element can burn out, either partially or completely. A partially failed element will produce reduced heat; a fully failed element produces none.

How to tell: The dryer runs and tumbles normally but produces no warmth at all. A technician can test the element with a multimeter and replace it if needed. This is one of the most common dryer repairs and is very cost-effective.

4. Faulty Gas Valve or Igniter (Gas Dryers)

Gas dryers use a burner system with an igniter and gas valve coils to produce heat. If the igniter fails to glow, or if the gas valve coils fail to open, the burner won’t light and you’ll get cold air only. You may hear the dryer clicking as it tries to ignite but fails.

Safety note: Gas dryer repairs should always be performed by a certified technician. Never attempt to repair gas components yourself. Our technicians are trained and certified for gas appliance repairs in NY and NJ.

5. Tripped Circuit Breaker (Electric Dryers)

Electric dryers run on a 240-volt circuit that uses two breakers in your panel. If one of those breakers trips, the motor may still run (giving you tumbling) while the heating circuit goes dead (giving you no heat). This is a surprisingly common issue that homeowners miss.

What to check: Go to your breaker panel and look for the dryer circuit. If one side has tripped, reset both breakers fully. If the breaker keeps tripping, there may be an electrical issue that needs a licensed electrician.

6. Defective Cycling Thermostat

The cycling thermostat regulates the temperature inside the dryer by turning the heating element on and off during the cycle. If it fails in the “open” position, the heater never turns on. This is less common than a thermal fuse or heating element failure but does occur, especially in older machines.

Diagnosis: A cycling thermostat failure looks identical to other no-heat problems, so proper diagnosis with a multimeter is important. A technician will test all heating components systematically to find the exact faulty part before ordering a replacement.
